Find YOUR Mountain

Located in the heart of the Rockies, on the Continental Divide, the Climax Ski Area was one of Colorado’s first, in operation from 1937 – 1963. It was opened to serve the miners and families of the town of Climax, the highest town in the US. The area was closed after the town of Climax was moved to Leadville to make way for the era of open-pit mining. That same year Vail opened, and the tiny Climax Ski Area saw its doom. The Climax Revival concept envisions a rebirth of the Climax Ski Area but reimagined for today, a much different world than 60 years ago.

The area between Chalk Mountain and Chicago Ridge has for years been a secret stash for locals in the know, and with the means to access it – either by skis with skins or with motorized assistance (snowmobile, snow cat). Averaging over 300” per year, it’s one of the snowiest spots in the state.

With sustainability and accessibility as core values, our vision is to re-create a place where people can connect with each other and the land, upon this historic high alpine environment. We aspire to educate and excite our guests to appreciate the unique opportunities and rich history of Climax. Sharing knowledge and providing the tools needed, we strive to create a fun and safe experience in the backcountry.

Owner, Founder, CEO, Chief Visionary

David Carner

David’s roots in the Central Colorado Rockies run deep, having grown up in Frisco. After a 26-year career in real estate and raising a family in the Boulder area, he returned to the mountains to develop his private property he has owned for 17 years to bring his vision of Climax Revival to fruition. With a passion for skiing, running, hiking, climbing and mountain biking, he has dreamed about developing Climax Revival for years.

David bought the Climax Revival property in 2005, with the intention to build a simple backcountry retreat. With the help of friends and family, he designed and built Carner’s Cabin, an off-the-grid backcountry ski hut. The cabin has been a successful backcountry rental through Airbnb for the last 11 years. It is also used for hut-based avalanche training by local guiding companies. David is a member of the Colorado Hut and Yurt Alliance based in Leadville. David’s passion and purpose is sharing his knowledge of the land, it’s history and appreciation of the natural environment. Creating astounding accommodations and exceptional experiences is David’s vision to build the Climax Revival brand.

Leslie Altman

Leslie has been in the outdoor industry for over 30 years. She is a guide, explorer, and adventurer. She found a deep love for the Rocky Mountains after graduating from CU Boulder. Mountains have been a place for exploration, adventure and healing for Leslie. She has held positions with Vail Resorts in guest services, mountain operations and canopy guiding. She has worked for outdoor companies including Patagonia, Fjallraven and Backroads. She has traveled to Peru numerous times to meet with her spiritual guides and explored some of the worlds most sacred places. She is the mother of 2 adult daughters who recently graduated from college, which gave her the chance to reignite her career aspirations and passion for the outdoors. She recently launched her own consulting business, Backcountry Beautiful.
